Role information

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Maintenance Technician to join a specialist engineering team responsible for carrying out planned and reactive mechanical maintenance on submarines during dockside maintenance periods.

Working within a highly regulated defence environment, you will undertake the inspection, maintenance, repair and overhaul of mechanical systems and equipment to ensure vessels are maintained to the highest safety and quality standards. You will work closely with engineering teams, supervisors and client representatives to deliver maintenance activities safely, efficiently and in accordance with technical documentation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned preventative and corrective mechanical maintenance on submarine systems and equipment.
  • Inspect, diagnose and repair mechanical faults using engineering drawings and technical documentation.
  • Remove, overhaul, refurbish and reinstall mechanical components including pumps, valves, pipework, rotating equipment and associated machinery.
  • Conduct mechanical testing and functional checks following maintenance activities.
  • Ensure all work is completed in accordance with engineering standards, quality procedures and customer requirements.
  • Produce accurate maintenance records, inspection reports and completion documentation.
  • Comply with all Health, Safety and Environmental regulations, including confined space and permit-to-work requirements.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and contribute to maintaining high engineering standards.
  • Work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams to deliver maintenance programmes to schedule.
  • Maintain good housekeeping standards within workshop and dockside working areas.

Qualifications/Experience Required

  • Recognised Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship, NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds or equivalent qualification.
  • Proven experience carrying out mechanical maintenance within heavy engineering, marine, defence, nuclear, manufacturing or industrial environments.
  • Experience maintaining rotating equipment, pumps, valves, hydraulic systems, pipework or mechanical assemblies.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical documentation.
  • Experience using mechanical measuring equipment and fault-finding techniques.
  • Strong understanding of safe systems of work and quality procedures.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to high quality workmanship.
  • Previous submarine, naval, marine or defence experience would be advantageous but is not essential.

UK National Security Vetting Status - Ability to gain SC Clearance
