Role Summary
You are an experienced and highly competent MSK Physiotherapist working as an autonomous practitioner within the outpatient service. You will deliver a patient-centred, evidence-based service to adults presenting with a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, referred via consultants, GPs, insurance providers, and self-referral pathways. The role involves the advanced assessment, diagnosis, and management of complex MSK conditions, including post-operative and chronic presentations, with the aim of optimising functional outcomes and patient experience. You may also treat older adolescents within agreed service parameters and governance frameworks. Clinical duties include the provision and fitting of appropriate orthotic and rehabilitation equipment (e.g. braces, Aircast boots, and mobility aids) as part of comprehensive patient management. As Deputy Lead MSK Physiotherapist, you will support the Lead MSK Physiotherapist in the operational and clinical leadership of the service. You will deputise in their absence, providing day-to-day clinical oversight, caseload support, and contributing to service delivery, performance, and patient flow. You will be actively involved in service development initiatives, audit, and quality improvement to ensure high standards of care and continuous service enhancement. You will contribute to the supervision, mentoring, and development of physiotherapy staff, including bank staff, and support workforce planning and rota coordination as required. The role also includes responsibility for the day-to-day coordination and line management of administrative staff within the Therapy department, ensuring efficient service delivery and patient pathways. You will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, maintaining clear, professional, and timely communication with both internal and external stakeholders. This includes ensuring accurate documentation, effective handover, and coordinated care to deliver a safe, efficient, and high-quality patient experience.
Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical To be independently responsible for the Physiotherapy management your patient load and to practice as an accountable professional using reflective practice and clinical reasoning in undertaking specialist assessment in order to provide an individualized treatment program for each patient. To obtain informed, valid consent on an ongoing basis which endeavours to keep them involved in their own health care plan. This includes education to support ongoing management. To provide programs of care for the MSK patients in your care through assessment and implementation of specialist MSK treatments in order to maximize their rehabilitation outcomes. To represent and advocate for your patients needs within the multidisciplinary team, including attending MDT meetings as required. To provide appropriate information, education and support for your client group and their carers. To comply with confidentiality policies as set out by Cromwell Hospital (CH), HCPC and the CSP. To respect a patients right to be chaperoned and appropriately implement the hospital chaperone policy. To accept accountability for your clinical and non-clinical actions. To maintain accurate, comprehensive and timely patient treatment records. To manage clinical risk within your caseload at all times and ensure potential clinical risk is effectively communicated and managed. To promote dignity, privacy and safety at all times, with particular consideration of the patients cultural, spiritual and personal needs and preferences. To maintain the highest standards of professional expertise and efficiency. Leadership To support the Lead MSK Physiotherapist with their operational and clinical responsibilities and deputise them in their absence To support all senior staff in their duties. Provide direct line management to the Therapy patient coordinator team and assist with supervision, mentoring and development of physiotherapy staff. To assist in the implementation of policies and strategies which aim to improve Therapy services for all staff and clients. To provide sound clinical opinion in order to support strategic development of clinical services as required by management. To support the provision of an efficient and appropriately flexible service. To participate in clinical audit and quality assurance programs within the Therapy Department and CH. To participate in hospital-guided projects and innovations as required. To support responsible utilization of the Therapy Department budget. To assist in the development, promotion and marketing of the Therapy Services. This includes participation in appropriate internal and external marketing activities, in conjunction with the Marketing Department. To assist in the continued day-to-day operation of the Therapy Department. To participate in the hospitals appraisal system and the departmental supervision program. To participate in the induction of new staff members as required. To behave in a way that promotes the participation of all colleagues in order to enhance the individual attributes and collective strengths of the team. To employ effective communication in all your interactions with patients, clients and colleagues. To utilize support systems in the hospital in the event of exposure to distressing circumstances. To accurately utilize the hospital's financial systems for treatment and equipment provided. To support and assist in the maintenance of adequate stock levels required within your specialty and the Department. To endeavor to prevent or diffuse potentially hostile and antagonistic situations with staff, patients and relatives and other visitors to the department. To make reasonable efforts to manage verbal complaints in the department and to utilize hospital systems and procedures for making formal complaints. To ensure accurate recording of appropriate departmental data as required by Management. To inspire others through your actions. Training and education To ensure all mandatory training requirements are met in a timely manner and according to hospital policy both for yourself and team. To take responsibility for your own personal development and to identify and utilize potential learning opportunities to continue to meet the needs of your patients and colleagues both for yourself and within your team. Evidence of this should be reflected in your continued professional development portfolio which aims to support successful audit and re-registration by the HCPC. To participate in the hospitals appraisal system focusing on your development needs and setting objectives which support those of the department and the hospital. To participate actively in the departmental In-Service Training programs. To share your knowledge, skills and experience and to work collaboratively with your colleagues. To participate in hospital and departmental processes that support and encourage professional and personal development of yourself and your colleagues.
