Subject-Specific Details
We are looking for an experienced Rail Engineering professional to join our team as a Rail Engineering Lecturer. This role is ideal for someone with a strong industry background who is passionate about developing the next generation of rail engineers.
The successful candidate will deliver high-quality teaching, practical training and assessment across a broad range of rail engineering subjects. The curriculum covers permanent way and infrastructure engineering, including track systems, ballast, sleepers, rails, switches and crossings (S&C), drainage, earthworks, rail maintenance, inspection, renewals, construction methods, rail safety and associated civil engineering principles. The role does not include signalling or telecommunications.
Applicants should have significant vocational experience within the rail industry, gained in areas such as track maintenance, renewals, infrastructure projects, permanent way, rail civils or related disciplines. Experience working on Network Rail or major rail infrastructure projects would be highly advantageous.
Whilst previous teaching experience is welcomed, it is not essential. We are keen to hear from experienced rail professionals who are looking to move into education, and full teacher training and support can be provided.
Key responsibilities include
- Deliver engaging classroom, workshop and practical learning sessions.
- Teach learners from Level 2 through to Level 3, with opportunities to contribute to higher-level provision.
- Assess learner progress and provide constructive feedback.
- Develop learning materials that reflect current industry standards and practices.
- Promote an excellent culture of health, safety and professional behaviours.
- Build and maintain strong links with employers to ensure the curriculum remains industry relevant.
- Support learners to develop the technical knowledge, practical competence and employability skills required for successful careers within the rail industry.
The ideal candidate will have
- Extensive industry experience in rail engineering, particularly permanent way, track maintenance, renewals or rail infrastructure.
- A recognised vocational qualification in Rail Engineering, Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
- Excellent communication skills and a passion for sharing knowledge.
- A commitment to developing learners and maintaining high standards.
- Teaching qualifications are desirable but not essential, as training and support will be provided.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced rail professional to use their industry expertise to inspire future engineers while enjoying excellent professional development, generous holidays and the opportunity to shape the future workforce of the rail industry.
