About this role
Applications are invited for Consultant post in acute paediatrics in the Department of Paediatrics based at the Children’s Hospital Oxford and at the Horton Hospital, Banbury.
Applicants should note that the post is intended to support services across both the Children’s Hospital, Oxford and the Horton General Hospital, Banbury, and that the distribution of duties may change over time in response to service needs, including a potential increase in activity at the John Radcliffe Hospital.
The successful applicant will join an established team of Consultant Paediatricians working in General, Ambulatory and Emergency Medicine at the John Radcliffe Hospital and at the Horton Hospital in Banbury. This post will consist of duties in the Paediatric Ambulatory Unit at John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, Acute Paediatric Wards at John Radcliffe Hospital and at the Horton Hospital, General Paediatric outpatients, and General Paediatrics on call. The post involves resident consultant duties including resident night shifts at the Horton Hospital, Banbury. It has no neonatal commitments.
Outpatient clinics
These clinics review referrals from GPs within the community as well as from Specialists within the Oxford Children’s Hospital. Rapid access clinics aim to review children within two weeks of referral following triage by the Paediatric consultant team.
CDU/ ED duties
The John Radcliffe has a busy Paediatric Ambulatory Unit(CDU, Children’s Clinical Decision Unit)which sees over 500 patients a month. The successful applicant will be responsible for the review & management of these patients as well as supporting & training staff. T
On call Duties
On call duties will include the management and discussion of patients admitted under Acute/General Paediatrics to the Oxford Children’s Hospital from 4:30 pm- 9am. Frequency of on calls will differ between summer and winter months. These shifts are non- resident after 7:30 pm in the winter and after 9:00 pm in the summer.

Duties consisting of daily ward rounds supported by a full MDT team
Horton Hospital
Resident night shifts at the Horton Hospital, resident evening and resident weekend shifts covering the children’s ward, emergency department, telephone advice for GPs and allied healthcare professionals including ambulance services.
