Applicants are invited to apply for a 12-month( fixed-term from 01.10.2026 until 30.09.2027) Consultant post in Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
This post will commence on 1st October 2026, is to cover a 12-month sabbatical and comprises 5 programmed activities (PAs), allowing the successful applicant the opportunity to pursue complimentary activities. A position on the specialist register with CCT (or equivalent) in ICM will be required at the time of interview.
This is a non‑exclusive locum appointment, and the postholder may undertake additional employment elsewhere in the remaining 0.5 WTE, provided this does not conflict with their duties, on‑call commitments, or the organisation’s governance requirements
The successful applicant will add to the existing a group of 10 intensive care consultants with sub-speciality interests in anaesthesia and acute medicine, who are responsible for the 10 bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Within the department, there will be excellent opportunities to develop personal interests, including echocardiography (including TOE), ultrasound, research, governance, outreach, ICU follow-up and NHS management. Job share arrangements with neighbouring trusts will also be considered on application.
In addition to general adult medical and surgical patients, the unit supports looking after a high number of paediatric patients requiring stabilising critical care and as such, an interest in this area would be advantageous.
On-call commitments will be 1 in 11 non-residents for the ICU.

Job Outline
- To work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide evidence-based care for all in patients. To liaise effectively and in a timely manner with surgical, medical, and nursing colleagues and all other health care agencies when appropriate
- To assist in the provision and development of a safe and effective Service and support the Trust in its aim to provide the best possible care to patients.
- To carry out all duties to the highest possible standard, and in accordance with current quality initiatives within that area of work.
- Cover for colleagues’ annual leave and other authorised absences.
- Participate in the ICM on-call rota.
- A willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels.
- To carry out his/her duties with due regard to the Trust’s Equal Opportunities policy at all times.
- To comply with Trust Health and Safety policies and maintain a safe and healthy environment for patients, visitors and staff.
Teaching
- To assist in the professional supervision and management of trainee medical staff
- To organise and participate in teaching, examination and accreditation duties for undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity.
- To participate in the education and teaching of nursing and ODP staff
Research and Audit
- To be actively involved in medical audit, the Trust’s Clinical Governance processes and in continuing professional development
- To implement audit and research findings as appropriate
Management & Communication
- To participate in all aspects of Service Line and Hospital affairs, including attendance at Consultant Meetings and to represent the department on appropriate committees/working parties when required.
- To develop and monitor performance indicators for the anaesthetic and critical care service and implement action as necessary
- To assist in the effective handling of patients’ complaints
The Trust has close clinical and academic ties with Oxford University Hospitals and the successful applicant will be encouraged to participate in teaching both under and postgraduate students associated with both Oxford and University of Buckingham Medical Schools (BMS).
The continued partnership with the University of Buckingham allows us to attract, train and retain the best doctors. The first BMS students arrived on wards in May 2015 and the medical school is now going from strength to strength, creating exciting opportunities for all staff in the fields of clinical research and education.
Located just 50 miles north of London, Milton Keynes is has excellent access to the capital whilst being centrally located for Oxford and Cambridge and having ease of access to the north. London Euston is 30 minutes by train and in autumn 2025, the EastWest rail service will open, connecting Milton Keynes to Oxford (20-25 minutes) and subsequently Cambridge by 2030.
