GP Receptionist – Job Description (Brief)

The GP Receptionist is the first point of contact for patients and visitors, providing a professional, friendly and efficient reception and administrative service. The role involves managing appointments, handling telephone enquiries, processing patient requests, maintaining accurate records and supporting the smooth day-to-day running of the practice while maintaining patient confidentiality at all times.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Welcome patients and visitors in a polite, professional and compassionate manner.

Answer telephone calls and deal with patient enquiries efficiently.

Book, amend and cancel appointments using the clinical computer system.

Process prescription requests in line with practice procedures.

Register new patients and update patient demographic information.

Receive, scan and process incoming correspondence.

Signpost patients to the most appropriate service where appropriate.

Handle confidential patient information in accordance with GDPR and NHS confidentiality requirements.

Undertake general administrative duties including filing, photocopying, emailing and document management.

Work collaboratively with GPs, nurses and the wider practice team.

Assist with opening and closing procedures and maintain a tidy reception area.

Follow all practice policies, procedures and health and safety requirements.
