Milton Keynes University Hospital is seeking an experienced and motivated Band 7 Inpatient Diabetes Specialist Nurse to join our Diabetes and Endocrinology team. This is an excellent opportunity to play a key role in supporting high-quality diabetes care for inpatients across the Trust.
Your responsibilities will include
· Delivering specialist input for patients with complex diabetes needs.
· Supporting ward staff with timely advice, education and clinical guidance.
· Contributing to inpatient diabetes safety initiatives, audits and quality improvement.
Acting as a visible clinical leader and role model across the Trust.
· Working collaboratively with the wider multidisciplinary team to optimise patient outcomes.
We are seeking a nurse who brings
· Significant post registration experience in diabetes care
· Confidence managing complex diabetes presentations
· Strong communication, teaching and leadership abilities

To provide expert care and advice to all patients with different types of Diabetes who attend the hospital either as an inpatient or outpatient.
To reduce the impact of symptoms and improve the quality of care for patients withdiabetes, including optimising treatment and providing education and support for patients and their families and carers.
To take the lead role in the development and delivery of expert education and training in the area of diabetes for other health professionals and stakeholders. To act independently and when necessary in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to ensure patients receive optimal care.
As a member of the diabetes nursing team, you will provide expert clinical support for adults with diabetes during their hospital stay. You will work closely with ward teams, offering specialist assessment, advice and education to ensure safe, effective and person-centred diabetes management.

- To demonstrate a professional approach to the leadership and management of the in-patient service.
- Assumes accountability and responsibility for practice and along with the members of the healthcare team, strives to attain the highest standard of practices.
- To be recognised as the clinical expert for diabetes representing the acute trust to external agencies. To be able to disseminate appropriate information to others across the acute trust.
Nurse/Patient relationships
- Demonstrates and establishes a relationship of trust with patients, carers, and families.
- Demonstrates expertise when dealing with complex patients with co morbid conditions and their families who require new skills to live with a chronic condition.
- Communicates and agrees with the patient, carer, and family the determined plan of care and to ensure the patient’s interests are fully considered within the context of care actively partaking in ethical decision making which can be complex and sensitive.
Management of patient ill health/illness status
- Receives direct referrals from medical staff, nursing staff and patient self-referral. Is able to review appropriateness of these referrals.
- To act as an expert practitioner in the management of the patient’s chronic condition, demonstrating advanced clinical skills and knowledge to professional staff and patients with a diabetes condition.
- Demonstrate awareness of the management of contentious information from patients in relation to their condition and treatment, which may include refusal of further interventions / treatment.
Education
- Identifies the ongoing training and educational needs of the person with diabetes, as well as their carers and their families in relation to the treatment and management of different types of Diabetes and the prevention of related complications.
- Provides specialist, expert education to the patient and their families as well as to other health professionals and stakeholders.
