Bhuku Ltd is seeking a reliable, engaging and enthusiastic Chess Tutor to provide occasional cover delivery for our prison-based Chess Club at HMP Lewes.

The Chess

Club supports prisoners to develop

confidence,

concentration,

communication skills,

teamwork,

planning and strategy skills,

and positive social interaction through structured chess activities.

This is a flexible zero-hours role with no guaranteed hours, ideal for someone with

chess coaching experience,

teaching/tutoring experience,

mentoring or youth work experience,

or experience working in custodial, education or community settings.

Delivery sessions take place

1 day per week (Tuesday)

AM session

09:00–11:30

PM session

14:00–16:30

Role Responsibilities

Deliver engaging chess sessions to groups and individuals

Support learners of mixed abilities

Promote confidence, teamwork and positive communication

Encourage participation from prisoners who may not normally engage in education or activities

Identify and support prisoners who could become chess advocates or peer supporters

Maintain professional boundaries and comply with prison security procedures

Complete attendance records and basic session feedback where required

Essential Skills and Experience

Good knowledge of chess and ability to teach beginners and intermediate players

Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to motivate and engage learners from diverse backgrounds

Reliable, professional and adaptable approach

Willingness to work within a prison environment

Desirable

Teaching, tutoring or coaching experience

Experience working with vulnerable adults or challenging behaviour

Experience in custodial or secure settings

Understanding of safeguarding and professional boundaries

All successful applicants will be subject to

HMPPS security vetting

Prison induction and security procedures

Compliance with anti-corruption and safeguarding policies
