Job Purpose

To support the learning, development, and wellbeing of pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) within a primary school setting. The role involves working closely with class teachers and the SENCO to provide tailored support that enables all pupils to reach their full potential.

Key Responsibilities

Support for Pupils

  • Provide one-to-one and small group support for pupils with SEND, adapting activities to meet individual needs.
  • Assist pupils in developing social, emotional, and behavioural skills.
  • Support pupils with communication needs, including the use of visual aids, Makaton, or other strategies where appropriate.
  • Promote independence while offering appropriate levels of support.
  • Assist with personal care needs where required, in line with school policies.

Support for Teaching and Learning

  • Work with the class teacher to implement SEND Support Plans or Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
  • Monitor and record pupil progress, providing feedback to teachers and SENCO.
  • Support classroom management and behaviour strategies to ensure a positive learning environment.

Support for the School

  • Contribute to a safe, inclusive, and supportive school environment.
  • Participate in training, and professional development related to SEND.
  • Follow school policies and procedures, including safeguarding, health and safety, and equality.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Experience working with children in a primary school setting.
  • Understanding of SEND, including a range of needs such as ASD, ADHD, and speech and language difficulties.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Patience, empathy, and a nurturing approach.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Desirable

  • Relevant qualification (e.g., Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant qualification).
  • Experience supporting pupils with specific needs.
  • Training in safeguarding, behaviour management, or SEND strategies.

We are a dynamic, friendly and caring school which is split across two sites – lower school (Nursery to Year 2), and Upper School (Years 3 – 6).
