Reading Borough Council • Reading, Berkshire

Technical Support Officer - Housing Compliance

About this role

We’re looking for an organised, resident-focused Technical Support Officer to join our Housing Property Services Team. This is a key role supporting building and fire safety across our housing stock - helping ensure we meet all regulatory requirements and maintain accurate, reliable records.

You’ll work closely with colleagues, contractors, customers and other stakeholders, to track and assure compliance data, identify gaps, and keep everything running smoothly behind the scenes.

We seek the best talent from the widest pool of people as diversity and inclusion is the key to our success. Reading Borough Council is a Disability Confident Employer and is committed to the recruitment and continued employment of people with disabilities.

About The Role

The role will be primarily based at 19 Bennet Road, Reading, RG2 0QX, but there is flexibility for hybrid working.

You’ll play a key role in supporting building and fire safety compliance by reviewing and assuring fire safety contractors’ work, making sure that they have accurate records, spreadsheets, and databases, ensuring that all information is accessible and up to date.

You’ll monitor compliance performance, identify any gaps or risks, escalate any concerns and proactively collect and validate data, to ensure that residents are safe in their home.

You will be supporting the Building Safety Manager by taking minutes of meetings, liaising with customers, and as the role develops you will carry out post work surveys and inspections, both on site, and over the phone.

Alongside this, you’ll provide day-to-day administrative and technical support to the Compliance Team, including processing purchase orders, invoices, and job orders, and producing monthly reports and performance data for the compliance manager.

This is a varied and rewarding role with the potential to develop with technical qualifications in building and fire safety, and where attention to detail and teamwork make a real difference to residents’ homes and experiences.

About You

We’re looking for someone with strong administrative and IT skills, particularly in Excel and database management, who can work accurately and efficiently in a busy environment. You’ll be confident managing competing priorities and maintaining attention to detail while supporting the team to deliver a high-quality housing service.

You’ll have experience working with customers both in person and over the phone, demonstrating professionalism, empathy, and the ability to resolve enquiries effectively.

Excellent communication skills are essential, including the ability to draft clear correspondence, take accurate minutes, and proofread documents to a high standard.

You’ll be part of a team that relies on each individual to play their part to the best of their ability. As well as the colleagues that you work closely with every day, you’ll also be part of Team Reading, playing your personal part in making Reading a successful and vibrant place.

Our vision is to ensure that Reading realises its potential as a great place to live, work and play, and that everyone shares the benefits of this success. Our values and behaviours guide how we will achieve this:

Work Together as one team - work collaboratively, with each other and with our partners, and demonstrate the Team Reading values in everything we do

Drive Efficiency - show initiative, be adaptable to change and put forward ideas to help improve delivery and efficiency. Take responsibility for our own learning and development and for reaching our potential

Be Ambitious - be demanding of our own performance – striving to be even better – and be prepared to engage with and challenge leaders in a constructive and positive way

Make a Difference to Reading - maintain the highest levels of customer service and be flexible and willing to provide the services needed at the time they are needed
