About this role
MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB
- To follow our ethos, working as a member of the Playcentre team to ensure that all children attending the setting, aged 2 years to 11 years, receive high quality care, are kept safe, and receive stimulating play experiences which meet their individual needs.
- To lead the day-to-day management, organisation, and smooth running of the Afterschool Club.
- To work within a culture of continuous improvement and support the Playcentre team in ensuring services are consistently of a high standard.
- To lead, motivate, and support the Afterschool team to provide a welcoming, inclusive, safe, and nurturing environment for all children.
- To work in partnership with children, families, schools, and outside agencies to ensure all children can fully access opportunities that support their health, safety, participation, play, learning, and wellbeing.
- To ensure the Afterschool Club operates in line with statutory requirements, safeguarding procedures, and Fiveways Playcentre policies and procedures.
- To support the Playcentre Manager.
MAIN TASKS / KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Safeguarding, Welfare and Compliance
- To be fully up to date with the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage statutory framework, relevant childcare legislation, safeguarding requirements, and all Fiveways Playcentre policies and procedures.
- To promote and safeguard the welfare of all children, ensuring any concerns are reported promptly to the Designated Safeguarding Officer and Designated Safeguarding Lead in line with safeguarding procedures.
- To understand safeguarding and Prevent responsibilities relating to children attending the Afterschool Club and ensure all staff understand and fulfil their responsibilities.
- To ensure children are cared for in a safe, stimulating, inclusive, and nurturing environment that supports their individual developmental needs.
- To ensure all standards of safety, hygiene, and risk management are maintained throughout the Afterschool Club, including completion and monitoring of risk assessments and the recording/reporting of hazards, accidents, and incidents.
- To ensure all policies and procedures relating to children with allergies, medical conditions, SEND, and individual care needs are fully understood and adhered to by all staff.
- To oversee the safe preparation and serving of food and ensure children receive a healthy and balanced teatime meal that takes account of dietary requirements, allergies, and cultural needs.
- To be responsible for the safe closure of the building each evening, ensuring security procedures are followed.
Leadership and Staff Management
- To lead and motivate the Afterschool team to deliver high quality play opportunities in a safe and caring environment.
- To provide line management, supervision, induction, and day-to-day support to Afterschool staff members.
- To support staff development through supervision, coaching, mentoring, and identifying training needs alongside the Playcentre Manager.
- To deploy staff and resources effectively, ensuring statutory adult-to-child ratios are maintained at all times.
- To develop and manage staff rotas, including arranging cover for sickness, absence, or emergencies.
- To hold staff meetings and contribute to training and development opportunities relevant to the Afterschool Club.
- To attend management, committee, team, and external support meetings as required.
- To attend relevant training, including safeguarding, SEND, and additional needs training where appropriate.
Operational Management and Administration
- To oversee the daily operation and organisation of the Afterschool Club.
- To supervise the collection of children from local infant and junior schools and ensure children are transported safely to the Playcentre in accordance with procedures.
- To maintain accurate records relating to attendance, staffing, accidents, incidents, medication, and daily operations, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with data protection requirements.
- To manage day-to-day administration relating to the Afterschool Club, including monitoring registers, staff absences, and communication records.
- To work closely with administrative staff to ensure registration forms, medical information, and relevant child information are up to date and shared appropriately with staff teams.
- To complete family show-round visits and respond to parent enquiries professionally and efficiently.
- To deal with parent queries relating to Afterschool provision, including operational and administrative matters.
- To contribute to the review and updating of Afterschool Club policies and procedures alongside the Playcentre Manager.
- To ensure confidential records and information are stored and managed appropriately.
- To support the Playcentre Manager with general operational duties.
Partnership Working and Communication
- To develop positive professional relationships with local infant and junior schools, families, the local authority, and other relevant professionals and agencies.
- To work in partnership with parents and carers to support children’s wellbeing, development, and inclusion.
- To attend Afterschool support meetings and networking opportunities provided by the local authority or other organisations.
- To communicate effectively with staff, parents, carers, and external professionals to ensure the smooth running of the provision.

Environment and Resources
- To contribute to creating a welcoming, organised, and inclusive environment for children, families, and staff.
- To ensure resources and equipment are safe, appropriate, and accessible for children’s play and development.
- To oversee the general organisation of the Afterschool environment, including ensuring waste and recycling procedures are carried out appropriately.
