About this role

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

We are looking for pharmacy support workers to work in the inpatient dispensary at Southampton General Hospital, but there may also be an opportunity to work in a rotational post between the Southampton General and Royal South Hants hospitals.

University Hospital Southampton is one of England's largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations.

Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalising your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

At UHS, we’re committed to providing a flexible working environment where possible. Whether you are balancing family, study, or your wellbeing with your career, we want to support you so you can help our patients.

At UHS, we proudly champion individuality, recognising that outstanding care is only possible with a diverse, inclusive team. We’re committed to creating an anti-racist, anti-discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive, and contribute.

The pharmacy dispensaries provide inpatient and discharge medicines to a variety of patients at Southampton General Hospital, Royal South Hants Hospital and outside units. You will be joining a multi-disciplinary team of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacy support workers, who work together to provide an excellent service to our patients. Excellent communication skills are essential, as is the ability to work accurately under pressure.

Our support workers work Mondays to Fridays, typically starting at 9am and finishing 5.15pm. Support workers in Southampton General dispensary also work at least one late shift per week, starting later in the morning and finishing by 7pm.

Our support workers also work on weekends on a rota basis; currently no more frequent than one shift in six weeks.

Your main tasks in the dispensary would include

Producing labels and dispensing medicines for patients to use in hospital and on discharge.

Working on the pharmacy reception, helping nurses and patients with queries and passing on information to the relevant persons (pharmacists/technicians)

Contributing to the department’s stock management, such as ordering, receiving and maintaining the medicines used by the dispensary.

Use of the dispensing robot to retrieve medicines.

Our pharmacy support workers also rotate into the Clinical Trials dispensary, where you will get to dispense medicines for patients going through cutting edge treatments.

A GPhC approved qualification will be completed as part of the role, and as such we require applicants to have Maths and English Language GCSEs or equivalent.

We are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this position.
