Job summary

Bhuku Ltd is recruiting a Chess Tutor to deliver a structured chess programme at HMP Wormwood Scrubs.

This role focuses on supporting prisoners to develop decision-making, problem-solving and positive peer interaction skills through the game of chess. The programme also contributes to improving mental wellbeing and engagement in purposeful activity.

You will deliver a weekly chess club combining theory, practical play and peer-led learning.

You will deliver a structured chess programme that supports learners to

Learn the rules and strategies of chess

Develop logical thinking and decision-making skills

Improve concentration, patience and problem-solving

Build positive peer relationships through structured gameplay

Engage in purposeful activity that supports wellbeing

You will also

Deliver weekly chess sessions (up to 4 hours per week)

Facilitate both theory-based learning and practical gameplay

Support learners at different ability levels, from beginners to advanced

Encourage and develop peer-led gameplay and mentoring

Organise and support chess competitions and events (including national prison tournaments where possible)

Provide learners with feedback, certificates and progress summaries

Track attendance, engagement and learner progress

Delivery may take place across different wings or locations within the prison.

Person specification

Essential

Strong knowledge of chess (rules, strategy and gameplay)

Experience teaching, coaching or facilitating learning

Ability to engage learners with diverse needs and backgrounds

Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Willingness to complete prison vetting and induction

Desirable

Experience delivering structured training or workshops

Experience working in a custodial or secure setting

Experience supporting peer-led learning or group activities

Understanding of wellbeing or therapeutic activities

Skills and experience

You will be

Confident delivering both instruction and practical sessions

Able to adapt sessions for beginners and more experienced players

Skilled in encouraging positive peer interaction

Organised and able to manage groups of up to 20 learners

Professional, reliable and adaptable in a secure environment

Additional information

This role is based in a Category B adult male prison with a diverse population

You will be required to

Provide chess boards and equipment for delivery

Work across different areas of the prison where required

Collaborate with prison staff and education teams

All staff must

Pass security vetting

Complete HMPPS induction and training

Follow all prison policies and procedures
