Service Delivery Manager | Barts Health NHS Trust

About this role

An exciting opportunity has arisen to recruit two permanent Service Delivery Managers within the directorate. One post will lead operational delivery within the Emergency Department (ED), and the second will oversee the Acute Assessment Unit (AAU) and Older People’s Services (OPS). Both roles are open to applicants with a proven record of operational delivery and service management, or those seeking to progress their career with experience in staff management, service improvement, and operational delivery.

With the goal of achieving excellence, you will actively participate in the day‑to‑day running of your service area and monitor team performance to ensure national and local targets are met. Working closely with your line manager, you will support delivery of the department’s clinical strategy and contribute to realistic, achievable performance goals. As the directorate continues to evolve, you will have opportunities to lead and manage your own improvement projects.

A key part of each role is delivering a first‑class customer service experience through confident communication and effective leadership. Your ability to manage administrative teams and support reception supervisors will be critical to success. A positive attitude and a fully hands‑on approach are essential for ensuring high‑quality operational delivery.

The Service Delivery Manager (SDM) is responsible to the Service Manager for the overall operational performance of their designated service area — either the Emergency Department or the Acute Assessment Unit / Older People’s Services.

You will be responsible for the day‑to‑day delivery of safe, effective services in line with agreed objectives, targets, quality standards, and resource constraints.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to

  • Managing key performance targets relevant to your service area (e.g., A&E standards for the ED post; flow, assessment, and discharge metrics for AAU/OPS).
  • Demonstrating continuous improvement in patient experience through balanced demand and capacity planning.
  • Supporting clinical teams — including Clinical Directors, Consultants, Matrons, and Heads of Nursing — to develop services in line with the clinical strategy.
  • Ensuring clear, transparent KPIs are in place and delivered consistently.
  • Resolving operational issues and escalating to the Service Manager when required.
  • Developing processes, allocating work, and managing resources to ensure a high‑functioning service.
  • Supporting directorate‑wide service improvement initiatives and contributing to pathway redesign.
  • Leading, supporting, and developing staff to enhance skills, confidence, and performance
