Lead Technical Architect, Home Office Biometrics

About this role

Home Office Biometrics delivers secure, lawful biometric services (fingerprints, DNA and face) that support policing, border security and identity assurance across the UK government. The DNA Enhancement Programme is being established in support of the Government’s Mission to reduce violence against women and girls (VAWG). This work will transformations the investigation of sexual offences, and serious crimes for the UK. Your role will be as a Lead Technical Architect in the Home Office Biometrics service, starting with an upgrade of the National DNA Database to meet these new demands.

Working within a cross-functional team, you’ll ensure alignment with broader government strategies while guiding solutions around modern technologies (the National DNA Database is cloud hosted). You’ll oversee multiple activities to support the delivery, combining innovation with security and agility.

This is a role for an architect who is passionate about delivery of technology that will supports victims of crime.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. As a Lead Technical Architect, you will proactively shape the technical solutions across multiple partners including the Forensic Information Database unit (FINDS) and wider Policing stakeholders. You don’t need to be an expert in DNA sequencing; we need you to work between the user (Policing / FINDS / Regulators) to convert their requirements into a solution to be implemented with our technical delivery partners. You will ensure the solution aligns with the wider enterprise.

Collaborating with a range of stakeholders, cross-functional teams, and external partners, you will need to make decisions that balance near-term delivery with long-term scalability, security, and maintainability.

You will define and evolve technical roadmaps, advise on strategic technology investments, and identify opportunities for continual improvement.

Through clear, concise communication, you will secure buy-in for architectural initiatives and working within the HOB architecture community to foster a high-performing community. By evaluating emerging trends, incorporating lessons learned, and championing best practices, you will keep the technical estate flexible and future-proof, positioning the organisation for ongoing success.
