Barts Health NHS Trust • London E1 1FR

Trust Doctor (eqv to ST4) in Renal Medicine and Transplantation | Barts Health NHS Trust

About this role

The Department of Renal Medicine and Transplantation in the Royal London Hospital is one of the biggest and most dynamic Renal units in the country and provides a comprehensive tertiary renal service for East London. These services encompass general nephrology, acute kidney injury (AKI), haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, transplantation, low clearance and supportive care. We also have a number of specialist areas of interests relating to renal disease, including cardiovascular disease, diabetic kidney disease, liver disease, HIV, lupus, vasculitis, transitional medicine, membranous nephropathy, podocyte diseases, PKD, IgA and renal obstetrics.

The junior medical team comprises 10 clinical registrars and 2 research registrars, alongside six IMT1 & IMT2 level trainees, three FY2s and one FY1. We also have 3 PAs in our team. There are 18 Consultant Physicians and 7 Consultant Surgeons.

The registrars rotate through a rolling rota with ward blocks on transplant and nephrology wards, HDU experience, outpatient clinics, and a dialysis block; these are interspersed with time covering on call shifts in the Renal Assessment Unit, Weekend shifts and on-site night shifts (1 week in 10 equivalent).

During your time in the unit we would aim to provide you with broad experience in all aspects of nephrology. This will be through your routine work on the wards and on-call, formal teaching, regular attendance at the unit academic meetings, and participation in journal club, as wegll as through opportunity to attend specialist clinics and completing research projects/QIPs.

You will also have opportunity to attend timetabled biopsy lists (native and transplant) which are consultant supervised, as well as participating in the medical PD catheter list. Vascaths are inserted on the wards by the SpRs and we have an active interventional radiology department who assist with tunnelled dialysis catheter insertion.

Renal medicine is a demanding specialty and our patients are often complex and sick. The wards and the on calls are busy but we have a strong team ethos and work together to achieve the best for our patients. We ensure you are well supported at all times and that clinical and educational supervision is of a high standard.

The Barts Health group of NHS hospitals is entering an exciting new era on our improvement journey to becoming an outstanding organisation with a world-class clinical reputation. Having lifted ourselves out of special measures, we now have the impetus and breathing space to chart a fresh course in which we are continually striving to improve all our services for patients.

Our vision is to be a high-performing group of NHS hospitals, renowned for excellence and innovation, and providing safe and compassionate care to our patients in east London and beyond. That means being a provider of excellent patient safety, known for delivering consistently high standards of harm-free care and always caring for patients in the right place at the right time. It also means being an outstanding place to work, in which our WeCare values and behaviours are visible to all and guide us in how we work together.

We strive to live by our WeCare values and are committed to promoting inclusion, where every staff member has a sense of belonging. We value our differences and fully advocate, cultivate, and support an inclusive working environment where staff treat one another with dignity and respect.
