An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic Maternity Care Assistant to join the Fetal Medicine Unit at Newham University Hospital.
The post holder will support the multidisciplinary team in the delivery of high-quality, safe, and compassionate care to women and families accessing specialist Fetal Medicine services. Working under the supervision of registered midwives and Consultant Doctors and Fellows, the Maternity Care Assistant will contribute to the smooth running of the service, ensuring that patients receive a professional and supportive experience throughout their care pathway.
The role requires a flexible and proactive approach, with the ability to prioritise workload, work both independently and as part of a team, and respond appropriately to the needs of women receiving care within what can often be a complex and emotionally sensitive environment.
Based primarily within the Fetal Medicine Unit, the post holder will provide flexible support across maternity services, assisting in the delivery of safe, effective, and compassionate care to women and babies. Working under the supervision of registered staff, they will undertake delegated clinical duties in line with training and competency, including phlebotomy, performing and recording clinical observations, and acting as a chaperone.
The role requires strong organisational and IT skills to accurately maintain electronic patient records, perform and chart clinical observations, manage clinic lists, and support patient flow. The post holder must be able to recognise changes in a woman’s condition and escalate concerns promptly and appropriately in line with Trust policy.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential to engage sensitively with women, families, and the multidisciplinary team, particularly within an emotionally complex environment. The post holder will ensure a clean, safe, and well-prepared clinical environment, adhere to Infection Prevention and Control and Health and Safety policies, and maintain patient dignity, confidentiality, and high standards of care at all times. A proactive, flexible approach, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, is essential.
