Pre-Assessment Nurse Specialist | Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced registered nurse to join our friendly Pre-Assessment team.

Pre-Assessment is a nurse-led clinic focused on optimising patients before surgery to achieve the best possible outcomes. We play a key role in the pre-operative pathway by identifying patients with complex co-morbidities, taking comprehensive medical, surgical and drug histories, and requesting and interpreting investigations such as blood tests and ECGs. By identifying risks early, we help prevent day-of-surgery cancellations, improve patient outcomes, maintain safety and reduce length of stay.

This is a full-time, 12-month secondment to cover maternity leave. Core hours are 08:00–18:00 Monday to Friday and 08:00–16:00 Saturday, with flexibility for long days (07:30–20:00). The POA clinic operates every Saturday, with at least one Saturday shift per month.

The service is based at Addenbrooke’s, with additional clinics at Ely Community Diagnostic Centre, so the ability to travel to both sites is essential.

Addenbrooke’s accepts complex patients from across the East of England, covering a wide range of specialties including colorectal, gynaecology, ENT, breast, upper GI, HPB, vascular, orthopaedic, urology and general surgery. Previous surgical experience or knowledge of these areas would be beneficial but is not essential.

Although the role involves autonomous working with individual caseloads, we work closely as a team, sharing clinical concerns and learning from each other. Monthly education sessions and team meetings support ongoing development.

We are seeking a dynamic and motivated nurse with strong clinical assessment skills to deliver a high-quality service. You must be able to work independently and have excellent written and verbal communication skills, as accurate documentation and multidisciplinary collaboration are essential.

As a Band 6 nurse, you will also undertake managerial responsibilities with support from Band 7 colleagues. These include appraisals, recruitment, supporting junior staff and taking charge of the unit on a rota basis. This requires strong leadership, problem-solving and delegation skills. You will also contribute to staff development and act as a role model.
