About this role

About the job

Luton Governor Services are looking for individuals to become school governors. You would be part of a friendly and supportive team of governors who contribute greatly to the continued success of each school.

Governors are people like you – you do not need to be a parent, but you do need to be over 18 and have a passion about improving the standard of education for all pupils in Luton schools. Any additional skills you have in either your work or family life is a bonus.

This is a voluntary role and you will be fully trained and supported throughout – meetings are generally held in the evenings and are a mixture of face to face and online.

School Governors work together to carry out their core functions

ensuring there is clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction

holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils and the performance management of staff

overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent

Governors must also ensure that the governing body complies with all legal and statutory requirements.

Benefits from becoming a governor

The opportunity to develop new skills and to strengthen existing ones.

An opportunity to strengthen your own CV for future work opportunities or voluntary roles

The opportunity to practise work talents. As part of a team, being a school governor will give you the opportunity to work with a wide range of people from a variety of social, cultural and religious backgrounds.

The opportunity to gain an understanding of the decision-making process of school governing bodies and an awareness of the education system as a whole.

The opportunity to make a real difference and the chance to contribute to the good of the community, leading to personal satisfaction and a sense of achievement.

The opportunity to undertake training provided by the Local Authority on various aspects of the governor role.
