About this role
Southend Hospital has a busy Surgical Department providing elective General Surgery, Colorectal and benign Upper GI services as well as a Complex Pelvic Cancer service.
We have 2 FY2 level vacancies in General Surgery.The position would suit doctors interested in surgical careers, who have completed Foundation training, and wish to spend a year gaining further experience in a range of surgical specialties, before entering core training programmes. In addition, they provide an alternative for those outside Deanery core surgery programmes, to build a surgical portfolio, and cater for a range of experience from FY2 to post-CT/ST2 level.
These are non-Deanery posts and require full GMC registration with licence to practice.
You will be based at Southend Hospital. You will generally be expected to undertake your normal duties at the principal place of work, however, in the course of your duties you may also be required to work at any of the sites within the Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust areas as well as other NHS sites as part of the delivery of the service.
The job description is a reflection of the present requirements of the post and the content may be subject to review and amendment in light of changes and developments , however some of the main duties include:
Liaise between nurses, other junior doctors, patients, relatives and senior medical staff
Attend and participate in ward rounds and operating theatre sessions as timetabled
Attend to the day-to-day management of day cases, out-patients and in-patients
Teach medical students as directed
Supervise, monitor and assist the FY doctors
Take part in 1 in 12 on-call Rota which also covers Urology
Keep up-to date with all administrative duties including letters, results and discharge
summaries as required
Study for higher examinations and maintain continued professional development
All Staff will also be expected to abide by the relevant code of professional practice relating to their discipline.
